The dust has finally settled and the smelly clothes are clean. Daughter dear is back into her old routines and grafting hard to complete coursework. Son one is trying to enjoy a bit of Dad time now I'm back; but the weather has scuppered our Ben Nevis plans and he's struggling with some sort of gut rot that has him firing at both ends. Sometimes there's no justice when you're the young one!
So what has that got to do with Stanwix scouts you'll be wondering? Just over a week ago we retuirned from a trip to Switzerland: Kandersteg International Scout Centre to be precise. The "we" is the 13th Carlisle (Trinity) Scouts. 16 young people and 6 relatively sensible adults enjoyed a week of non stop activities in that fantastic alpine environment where the little hill walks might take 10 hours :-)
Naturally enough, with some of the youngsters having had the Kandersteg experience a few years ago, we split into 2 fairly constant groups for many of the days. The younger scouts were based mainly around Kandersteg itself for their activities. While the older Ayers Explorers, with their Extreme scouting mentality beginning to take hold, were able to get into the full Alpine Experience. I was lucky enough to be the one accompanying the older ones on their big days out. Firstly; on the 2 day glacier workshop where they were introduced to crampons, axes and crevasses: and later in the week on their 2 day "jaunt" to climb their first 10000ft peak.
I hope the youngsters themselves will tell the stories on the web site themselves in the near future. My reason for blogging about the trip is to say how well these youngsters got on with everything that was thrown at them. New experiences, donkey work, routines - there was hardly a word out of place all week. The vast majority of these youngsters are Stanwix kids, so what better place to trumpet their achievements.
You can see some of their activities on my facebook
If your son or daughter came with us, then you've got many reasons to be proud of your youngsters. I know someone who's got 3 reasons to be proud!
