Ben Phillips - The Vicar of Stanwix Hits the Headlines PDF Print E-mail

It's not often you see Stanwix in the national news or hear us getting mentioned on Radio 4, but Ben's created quite a ripple with his recent offer.  The BBC was headlining it on their website for a while with:

"A Cumbrian vicar is offering to help cash-strapped couples pay for a wedding in church."

RevBen Phillips, from St Michael's Church, in Stanwix, and St Mark's in Belah, wants to help couples who are genuinely struggling to pay.

The Church of England vicar said he will personally cover the £250 statutory cost.  He said he wanted to support couples and was worried they were putting off their weddings because of the cost.

Mr Phillips said: "I am offering this to any couple in Stanwix who would like to have a Christian marriage and who genuinely cannot afford it.  "I will personally pay your statutory fees."

I am worried about people feeling that they have to have a fortune in money before they can commit in their love
Rev Ben Phillips

Mr Phillips, who earns £21,000 a year, said he would be quite happy to be overwhelmed by approaches although he is not expecting to be.

I'm not a great believer in the religious side of things myself, and I have seen some priests and vicars who have been extremely poor role models through my younger years, when I was involved in the faith business, but the more I see of Big Ben and Young Ben the more I think this community has got two pretty outstanding characters running their parish.

It'll be interesting to see if the  Church is overwhelmed by a tide of suddenly convinced couples.  All the best to everyone who does decide to take the plunge.
