Nikki Wingfield was in touch about the opening ceremony for the new Connect2 section at the Denton Holme Bridge. It is being postponed. Nikki explains:
Bit of bad news I’m afraid. We are going to have to postpone the official opening of the first section of Connect 2 as it won’t quite be complete and also the Environment Agency have requested that we hang fire until they are complete as well. (Was planned for 23rd at 11am at Bay Pub new bridge). |

I received an email from Jenny Baines of Cycle Carlisle:
We have some good news in that Cycle Carlisle, through Carlisle Environmental
Action, has been successful in a bid for a £50,000 Land Fill Tax grant. This
will be used to provide lighting along part of the Caldew Cycleway, as part of
the Connect2 project.
The many E-mails and letters which were sent in
support of this grant showed how much local support there is for the project and
certainly helped us obtain the grant. Thank you to all who helped.
The
Chief Executive Officer of Sustrans is opening the Missing Link at the new
bridge near the Bay pub in Denton Holme on Wed 23 September at 11.00. We are
hoping for a big turnout to celebrate the completion of this new stretch of the
Caldew Cycleway and hope that as many of you as possible will be able
to attend.
Best Wishes
Jenny Baines
Secretary, Cycle
Carlisle
This is a remarkable string of success for the once tiny group of cycling enthusiasts who have a mission to make cycling the attractive option for people in Carlisle. So if you are free on the 23rd of September at 11o'clock in the morning, why not pop along and show your appreciation by supporting the opening ceremony of the missing link when Sustrans Man, Malcolm Shepherd comes to cut the tape

You may have notice d the story, in Carlisle's local papers about Roman remains turning up in the ground, as clearance work continues at the old Gates Garage site in Stanwix (where Treadfast George once upon a time, used to look after several of my ex teaching colleagues). As the old structure disappeared at the hands and booms of the demolition firm, so the chance for archaeologists to examine a site covered in concrete since the 30s presented itself.
For the building firms and their clients it's always an organisational pain and a worrying wait when they decide to set the archaeologists loose. For the rest of us though, it's a chance to wonder at what might be turned up. It would be a turn up for the books if the digs over the next few years were to turn up Yorvik quality remains. We'd have to go for "City of Culture" status then! |
