You may have notice d the story, in Carlisle's local papers about Roman remains turning up in the ground, as clearance work continues at the old Gates Garage site in Stanwix (where Treadfast George once upon a time, used to look after several of my ex teaching colleagues). As the old structure disappeared at the hands and booms of the demolition firm, so the chance for archaeologists to examine a site covered in concrete since the 30s presented itself.
For the building firms and their clients it's always an organisational pain and a worrying wait when they decide to set the archaeologists loose. For the rest of us though, it's a chance to wonder at what might be turned up. It would be a turn up for the books if the digs over the next few years were to turn up Yorvik quality remains. We'd have to go for "City of Culture" status then! |

The
Friday rush was just starting and suddenly; out of nowhere, appeared a host of golden ... cyclists! The previous Critical Mass ride last month was very successful. We got some
excellent press coverage and it lead to a big debate on the News and Star
website.

We are really keen to keep the profile of cycling in
Carlisle
high and the ride worked very well to do that. |
